With his ASBO still in force, Hector was disappointed that he was unable to travel with me to Edgbaston this morning. But eager to play his part in supporting the team, he’s written a song.
Originally the lyrics he penned were meant to be sung to the tune of Oasis’ Wonderwall – after all, if it’s good enough for the England football team, it’s surely good enough for Somerset.
But anxious about incurring the wrath of the Gallagher brothers who, picky about copyright issues, are apparently big Lancashire fans with the ear of the fearsome Lanky the Giraffe – not literally! – he thought better of it.
So instead he’s renamed the piece ‘We are Somerset’ and, having spent yesterday in the recording studio with some musician friends, has produced the following for your listening pleasure.
And, credit where credit’s due, as a bass baritone, he does remarkably well at hitting the high notes.
Hector says he hopes you’ll enjoy the song as you travel to the ground and that we’ll all perhaps be singing it from the stands as the players celebrate victory later this evening.

And for when you need to singalong later, here are the lyrics…
Today is gonna be the day
that we’re gonna bring it home again
By now, you should have somehow,
realised the trophy we’ll retain
I don’t believe that anybody feels the way we do about you now.
Craig O, now everybody knows,
The fire in your heart’s ablaze
We saw, what we all knew before
How you can all of us amaze
I don’t believe that anybody feels the way we do about you now.
And all the team are equally terrific
With Riley Meredith now bowling so quick
There are TKC and Banton and of course Will Smeed
The Rews both J. and T.
But then maybe
It will be Goldsworthy
With Louis Gregory
And don’t forget
We are Somerset!
They said, get it out your head
You ain’t gonna qualify
But hey, you know how to play,
And so you can the odds defy
I don’t believe that anybody feels the way we do about you now
And Daniel Sams he used to play for Essex
But now with Jakey Ball will enjoy success
There are others too like Leach and Vaughan and Shaw
Perhaps Tom Abell too.
But then maybe
It will be Goldsworthy
With Louis Gregory
And don’t forget
We are Somerset
And don’t forget (And don’t forget)
You’re gonna be the ones that win it
And don’t forget
We are Somerset
And don’t forget (And don’t forget)
You’re gonna be the ones that win it
(win it)
You’re gonna be the ones that win it
(win it)
We’re gonna be the ones that win it
(win it)
