my love is NOT a red, red rose

OUR LOVE IS NOT A RED, RED ROSE –
A VALENTINE’S DAY POEM FOR SOMERSET SUPPORTERS

Our love is NOT a red, red rose,
Nor is it one that’s white,
And daffodils, of yellow hue,
Do not our hearts excite.

Our fervour’s not for foxes and
Our yearning’s not for bears,
Our longing’s not for martlets and
Our passion’s not for pears.

We don’t desire seaxes,
(As if we ever could)
No matter if from Chelmsford or
From dear old St. John’s Wood.

And even if we found ourselves
At the end of our tethers,
We still would never ever crave
For Prince of Wales’ feathers.

For ‘tis a dragon that we love –
Or wyvern, (as some claim),
But come what may, our love’s as sweet,
When called by either name.

Because it’s this we’re certain of,
The beast that makes us swoon,
Has colours of distinction that
Are black, white and maroon!

Stumpy – much loved mascot of Somerset CCC
