ON REFRAINING

Fearful of dire consequences,
Were I found guilty of offences,
I always tried to keep the rules
When patronising swimming pools.

So whilst I swam you’d see me striving
Avoiding zones reserved for diving,
And I from pushing was prevented
Despite my being sorely tempted.

When I was poolside I’d not yell,
My need for speed I’d somehow quell,
And then when cigarettes I craved,
I just refrained and thus behaved.

Because I did all that I oughta,
I’d not hold others under water,
And resisted acrobatics
And gymnastical aquatics.

Although with joy and with panache
I longed to bomb and make a splash,
Because the rules restraint required
I did not act as I desired.

And never having had the chance
To even once enjoy romance,
With no one aiding or abetting,
I kept myself, alas, from petting.

And so I think we can assume
My swimming long-unused costume
Now rarely sees the light of day
For there’s no fun in water play.

Nothing particularly interesting to say about myself other than after 27 years working as a GP, I was delighted, at the start of December 2023, to start work as the South West Regional Representative of the Slavic Gospel Association (SGA). You can read about what they do at sga.org.uk. I am also an avid Somerset County Cricket Club supporter and a poor example of a Christian who likes to put finger to keyboard from time to time and who is foolish enough to think that someone out there might be interested enough to read what I've written. Some of these blogs have grown over time and some portions of earlier blogs reappear in slightly different forms in later blogs. I apologise for the repetition. If you are involved in a church in the southwest of England and would like to hear more of SGA’s work, do get in touch. I’d love to come and talk a little, or even a lot, about what they get up to!.
